Throttle Position Sensor or Idle problem?
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:39:54 PM »
I have, on several occasions recently, had the engine die on me in between shifts when I clutched it and let the revs drop too low.  I have "solved" this problem by altering by behavior (as in, being speedy in between shifts and trying to keep the wrist steady between downshifts, not backing off the throttle too much in other words).

Here are some examples of when this has happened:

First time:  I was running low on gas and clutched it to coast to an upcoming red light.  As I slow down and get close to the light, I downshifted to 2nd and left the clutch out - the engine dragged like crazy so I clutched it again and looked at the tach - sitting on zero, like I had the key turned on but hadn't started it yet.

Second time:  on a long ride, decided to ease the cramp in my right (throttle) hand by clutching it for a second to shake my hand out.  After a couple of seconds or so off the gas, I go to give it some gas to get the engine back up to speed before letting the clutch back out - no throttle response.  Again, the tach was sitting on zero.  I ended up sort of "push starting" the bike by just continuing to let out the clutch until the engine fired up again.

Third time: this past weekend, the same thing happened except that this one was because I took too long selecting gears on a two gear downshift.

I also blipped the throttle once when I was sitting parked just messing around, and it revved and then died.  :(

Not sure exactly what's going on.  Everything else has been tip-top, no problems whatsoever.  Any and all theories and advice welcome.

I'm no mechanic, so I don't know what I'm talking about.  But my car did something similar when the TPS went out.  The motor would just putt putt and die if I wasn't giving it some gas.  Maybe you've got a fuel mixture issue like running really rich at idle?  Again, just talking out of my butt.  Just giving you some food for thought.

Also no mechanic, but I'd check the idle setting. Some DL1000 V-Stroms suffer from this, and setting the idle a 100 or so rpms above the Owners Manual recommendation solves it.

It was the idle speed (set too low).  Thanks Bill!
