R6 Clutch Replacement
« on: February 03, 2010, 02:36:07 PM »
Well, the clutch gave out on the R6 today. The question is, DIY - yay or nay? Westcoast is asking $285 for the part and $450 OTD.

EBAY has the part going for $170. A couple of forum searches indicated 4-5 hrs of DIY labor time. Has anyone here replaced their own clutch?

I've never done such an involved project myself, but I would base the decision on these factors:

- do you have the shop manual for the bike?

- do you have some decent tools?

- are you patient enough to get through it (I know I am not patient enough for some projects)

and probably most importantly:

- do you have a garage/space to work on the bike, where you could leave it disassembled for a few days if need be?

I am all for doing stuff yourself, as much as you can up to and including a complete teardown.  The more you know ...

I hear good things about Westcoast

I did one in a Ninja 250. I was easy, probably only took a couple of hours.

I did not replace the basket, I think you would need a clutch holding tool to replace that.

Yeah, I'm not really a patient person, but I have done a fair amount of bike work...albeit out of financial necessity when I first got into riding. I don't particularly enjoy working on bikes, but I'll do all the basic stuff...maintenance, accessories, etc.

I do have a garage, tools, and shop manual, so I can do this myself, just not feeling very motivated haha. But then again, $300 is kind of a good motivator.

Jim, I'm not so sure I know what you mean by the basket? I'm looking to replace all the plates and springs.

Anybody want to help? Free pizza and beer.

John depending on scheduling - and how far away from the LBC you live - I might be able to "observe" and consume said pizza/beer.  ;)  At the very least I could encourage/berate you, as needed.

Just give me a call if you decide to do it.  I'll most likely be able to help.

The basket is what the plates go into. I don't think you would need to replace it unless something is damaged.

I wrenched on the mtn bike this weekend. Let's just say I had minimal use of the rear brakes on the subsequent ride. I think I will be handing R6 over to the experts.

May I begin to berate you now?  ;)

Hey I have a bike (as in bicycle) stand if anyone ever wants to bring their bike on down to LB.  I have a patio and everything.  :)
